Lagan & Marriage FAQs
Frequently asked questions about the Nepali Lagan calendar, auspicious dates, and traditional wedding astrology.
Lagan, also known as Vivah Muhurat, is an astrologically auspicious time selected for a wedding. It is calculated based on the positions of the stars and planets to ensure the couple's spiritual and marital harmony. In Nepali culture, choosing a 'Shubh Lagan' is believed to bring prosperity and long-term happiness to the union.
Our calendar uses high-precision astronomical data from the Swiss Ephemeris. We apply the traditional 'Vivah Shuddhi' rules, which analyze the Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), and Yoga. We also calculate specific Lagna rising times every 30 minutes to find the most potent windows for the wedding ceremony.
Traditionally, the months of Mangsir (Nov-Dec), Magh (Jan-Feb), Falgun (Feb-Mar), Baishakh (Apr-May), Jeth (May-June), and Asar (June-July) are considered most auspicious. However, the exact dates depend on yearly planetary shifts and religious restrictions like Malmas or Pitripaksha.
Certain periods are considered 'Ashubh' (inauspicious) for major life events. This includes Malmas (extra lunar month), Pitripaksha (fortnight of ancestors), and 'Khyat' (when Venus or Jupiter are too close to the Sun, losing their power). During these times, the energy isn't ideal for beginning a new chapter like marriage.
Our system is designed to be highly accurate, matching approximately 98% with standard sources like DrikPanchang. It uses real-time coordinate-based calculations for cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. While it is excellent for initial planning, we always recommend a final consultation with your family Pandit for personalized Kundali matching.
This calendar identifies general Shubh Muhurats (auspicious times) available for everyone. 'Kundali Matching' (Guna Milan) is a personalized process where the bride and groom's birth charts reflect their specific compatibility. A date marked 'Shubh' here is generally good, but individual astrological charts might have specific restrictions.
Vivah Shuddhi is the process of eliminating 'Doshas' (astrological flaws) from a marriage date. It ensures that the selected time is free from negative influences like 'Vaisakha Dosha' or 'Sankranti'. A Shuddhi-filtered date is considered pure and powerful for a lifelong commitment.
Tithi represents the moon's phase and influences the emotional aspect of life. Nakshatras are the lunar mansions that represent the deeper nature of the day. Certain Nakshatras like Rohini, Mrigashira, and Revati are particularly favored for weddings as they symbolize stability, love, and growth.
Astrological times like Sun Rise, Sun Set, and Lagna (Ascendant) changes are highly dependent on geographical coordinates (Latitude & Longitude). A Lagna slot might start 10 minutes earlier in Biratnagar than in Kathmandu. Our tool allows you to select your city to get the most precise local timing.
If a date isn't marked Shubh, it usually means it doesn't meet the primary 'Vivah Shuddhi' criteria. However, for emergencies or special cases, some Pandits may find 'Abhijit Muhurat' or other exceptions. If our calendar doesn't show a date as Shubh, it's best to look for the next available green-marked date.
While court marriage is a legal process and doesn't strictly require an astrological date, many families still prefer to sign the papers or celebrate during a Shubh period to align with cultural traditions and seek a positive beginning.
Generally, no. Vedic astrology considers the period during and immediately around a Solar or Lunar eclipse to be highly unstable. Auspicious ceremonies like weddings are avoided during Grahan (eclipse) and Sutak periods to prevent negative energy influences.
The calendar is calculated dynamically. As soon as you select a month or year, our backend performs the complex orbital calculations for that specific period. This ensures you always see the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate astrological data.
Sait refers to the exact micro-moment or window within a Shubh Lagna when the main ritual (like 'Swayambar' or 'Sindoor Halne') should take place. While our calendar provides the 'Shubh Windows', the final 'Sait' is usually narrowed down to a few minutes by a priest.
The most powerful Nakshatras for wedding success include Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These are associated with longevity, fertility, and deep mutual understanding.
